Marine Freed from Occupied Territories During Complex Operation After Spending 1.5 Years in Captivity — Ukrainian Navy

A special unit of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, «Angels,» conducted a complex multi-stage operation to evacuate a marine who had been held in Russian captivity for about 1.5 years, successfully returning him to Ukrainian-controlled territory.

«While on a mission, the marine was captured by Russian forces and spent approximately 1.5 years in captivity. During this time, he repeatedly suffered and witnessed torture and abuse of Ukrainian prisoners. From the first days of his captivity, the special reconnaissance unit ‘Angels’ was exploring ways to bring the marine back,» the report states.

Additionally, the unit provided constant support to his mother, Olha, a Ukrainian language teacher.

«A considerable amount of effort was invested in freeing Oleksandr. As a result of a complex and multi-stage operation, developed by the Intelligence Directorate of the Naval Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the ‘Angels’ successfully evacuated the 29-year-old marine. For security reasons, the details of the operation are not disclosed,» the Ukrainian Navy reported on Facebook.

The reunion of mother and son took place in the office of Vice Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa, Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, who personally oversaw the operation at every stage.

The Ukrainian Navy noted that Oleksandr became the 69th person successfully evacuated by the «Angels» to Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The Naval Command expressed deep gratitude to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, for his assistance in this operation.
